When the princess Araxnia saw Thenius, she fell madly in love. He promised upon destroying the beasts of her father’s Labyrinth on the lost island of Erebus that he would return for her, and they would sail to his home in Periandropolis. She gave to him one of Erebus’s most beloved treasures, a spider with endless silk, to guide him through the maze as he challenged the beasts. She waited by the seashore for days, and when the ground shook, she knew her love had triumphed. But he boarded his ships and left without a glace back for her, and the sting of betrayal filled her with hatred and malice. She cried out to Gaia to allow her to take vengeance on the traitorous Thenius, and was warped by the fell energy. Her legs became a great black spider, and her magical talent increased. Filled with hatred, she descended into the pits of the maze and marshalled the monsters still left, raising as undead those already slain. Her father was killed in the quake, so the Queen of Erebus unleashed untold horrors on her own people, burning the city to ash and taking as prisoner every living man, woman, and child. By dawn, the entire island had disappeared. Araxnia is considered by many a tragic character, twisted by fate into the monster she hoped to stop. Some say the island withdrew beneath the waves, deep into Gaia’s own bosom, and her twisted daughter warps the flesh of her people into horrific shapes, waiting to unleash them against all Calopius for the scorn of Thenius.
