As the Mother of Epics, Calliope is the most famous of the Muses. She inspires both heroes and those who write their tales. No story is more respected in Calopius than her inspired poems, and every epic begins with an invocation begging her guidance when writing. She is depicted as a tall woman, always moving and in profile. Long black hair trails behind her, as she points the way with a rapier and a wand. Adventurers seek out her wandering cleric-scribes to impart their tales, and if their story is worthy enough to inspire a poem, they may earn a Token of Calliope, a brooch to be displayed with pride. Having such a token is likely to earn one a free round of drinks in a tavern, or more lucrative offers for adventuring employment. However, by the goddess’s magic, any token gained through trickery or theft immediately rusts over, staining the one touching it. Her clerics rarely stay in one place long, preferring to move between roadside shrines and taverns where they are most likely to meet new adventurers. Such clerics often carry extra supplies to sell to the needy explorer.
