The gnomish sage who found the Tablet of Invention set the precedent and pace for her entire race. Cleobulus practiced every method of invention, from alchemical to architectural, and everything in between. Her efforts filled volumes of notes with sketches of more efficient knots for sailors, means of hoisting great stones with pulleys and cranes, even designs for fanciful machines not yet possible, such as a strange, foot-powered flying machine dubbed the monothopter. All these and more found their origins in Cleobonomos, the city that emerged around the workshops of the gnomish inventor. Never satisfied with a design, Cleobulus wandered every road after the cities were joined, gathering the best ideas from every region to unite them on her isthmus home. And the city flourished.
Many gnomes and inventors of all stripes look to Cleobulus as their own form of a Muse. Hoping to learn from her study of all things, they embrace her mantra, “Moderation is the best thing, do nothing by force.” As such, despite their frenzied lives, they are early to bed, quick to rise, and round their studies across disciplines lest a concept from one school be useful in a project they are working and they fail to recognize it. Cleobulus’s clerics love to experiment, many dabbling in the art of Theurgy, the attempt to blend arcane and divine powers into single spells. While still an emerging field, many hold out hope it is the means to an untold golden age of progress and prosperity.
