Cleric

As the trained priests and pious devotees of the gods, Clerics serve as the fundamental component and most common image of religion in Calopius. It is their duty to tend temples, statues, and altars to ensure the benevolence of the gods. Clerics are modeled after the service of the Sages, learning through study, prayer, and sacrifice how to channel the divine. The rites manifest differently for each god, but clerics almost universally undertake preliminary oaths as acolytes first, learning the basic skills of using divine magic, and after years of study and practice, they can undertake more intensive oaths as full Clerics. The rite is secured when the Cleric officiates their first sacrifice to their god.

Performing the sacrifice is the most important duty of the Cleric, each god having a subtly different collection of prayers and rites to enact while splitting the victim and spilling the entrails. Clerics are also usually trained in divination in order to read signs in the intestines, though detailed predictions are left to the mysterious Oracles. For the duty of protecting their temples in the event of attack, clerics must also train with weapons, most often their deity’s favored weapon. The life of a cleric is one of devotion, though not always of remaining in one place. Itinerant Clerics are called by their superiors or their god to bring their skills to the wilderness, sometimes with adventurers and other times alone.
