Thantadeus is the greatest of the Hupotheon, lord of the realms of the dead. In the endless darkness beneath Calopius, he has made his palace. He took Eleusinia as his bride in the great Cosmomachy. Though this earned the wrath his brethren, it could not be undone. It was his knowledge of the great chasms of the world that allowed Gaia to be bound. Charging on his skeletal horse, the King of Shades struck down more titans than any other god with his terrible lance, save the rage of Polumachos. When he made his case for the head throne, it was contested by his elder brothers, Xiphios and Thalattos. By Parthaenae’s game of chance, Thantadeus was forced to take his mournful bride to the underworld rather than seating her on the throne of heaven. Retreating to build a palace on his own, Thantadeus forced the shades of the Titans into tormented bodies called Kytons and used them to build his Bonewhite Palace.
Despite his wrath, Thantadeus refuses to take the throne by unlawful means. He is patient and careful, plotting centuries ahead of time. And quietly, the halls of the dead fill more and more with the shades of the dead. The Bonelord is self-assured and has confidence and pride in spades. His form is that of an aristocrat, with black and gray robes and a stained black metal helm. His palace is surrounded by a forest of petrified trees and encircled by the circular river Lethe, whose waters rob memories, and is fed by the Styx, who saps away the mortal body. Guarded by monsters chained to the same massive bonds as bind Gaia’s form, Thantadeus rarely interacts with mortals. All cities have a temple of the King Below to honor the dead.
Clerics and oracles of Thantadeus gladly serve for a price, offering services for the dead and guidance for shades. They openly commune with the occult to locate points where the restless dead try to forge their way to the mortal plane once more. Rangers dedicated to Thantadeus specialize in hunting the undead with bonded mounts and deadly lances. The rare few who prove themselves to their patron of the Denied Throne can earn a blessing of Ghostflame, a nearly invisible force that forces shades to react as if still made of flesh. Happy to play their role, the faithful of Thantadeus know their movements are but ripples leading to the ascension of their lord and the unseating of Xiphios. And all his faithful look forward to the establishment of true law in the world, rather than the whims of the capricious gods today.
